From humble beginnings in 1975 to becoming Uganda’s most decorated football institution, SC Villa has been shaped by visionary leaders who guided the club through triumphs, transitions, and transformation. This feature explores the presidents who built the Villa legacy — the foundation layers, the golden-era architects, and the modern reformers working to restore the Jogoos to continental glory.

For decades, SC Villa has stood tall as Uganda’s most successful football club — a symbol of dominance, resilience, and tradition. Behind the trophies, legendary players, and historic matches lies a powerful story of leadership.

At Uganda Fan TV, we take a deep dive into the presidents who shaped the destiny of the Jogoos.

The Foundation Years (1975–1979)

Daniel Musoke Kiwalabye

Every giant has a beginning.

Daniel Musoke Kiwalabye became SC Villa’s first president in 1975 when the club was formed (initially as Nakivubo Boys). His leadership laid the structural and administrative foundation of what would become a football empire. Though the early years were about establishment rather than silverware, his vision planted the seed of greatness.

The Rise to Dominance (1979–1993)

Patrick Edward Kawooya

If there is a golden architect of Villa’s dominance, Patrick Kawooya is one of them.

During his tenure, Villa transformed into a national powerhouse. The 1980s saw the club collect multiple league titles and build a reputation for discipline, talent development, and competitive excellence. Under Kawooya, SC Villa became the team every other club feared.

The Long Reign & Continued Success (1993–2010)

Franco Mugabe

Franco Mugabe’s leadership marked one of the longest-serving eras in the club’s history.

Villa continued to dominate domestically, winning league titles and Uganda Cups while maintaining a strong presence in continental competitions. However, as the years progressed, financial and structural challenges began to surface, signaling the need for modernization.

Still, Mugabe’s era remains one of sustained success and stability.

The Transition Years (2010–2014)

Fred Muwema (2010–2012)

Salim Ssemanda (2012–2014)

This was a turbulent period in Villa’s history.

Fred Muwema took charge during financial uncertainty and worked to stabilize the club’s operations. He was later succeeded by Salim Ssemanda in an interim role as the club navigated administrative reforms.

Though trophies were limited during this period, these years were critical in keeping the club afloat during instability.

The Modern Revival (2014–2018)

Ben Immanuel Misagga

Ben Misagga brought corporate-style leadership and renewed energy.

His presidency revitalized the club’s brand and fan engagement strategy. Most notably, SC Villa ended a long league title drought by winning the 2015/16 Uganda Premier League title — a moment that reignited belief among supporters.

Marketing improved. Visibility increased. Villa felt alive again.

The Governance Reform Era (2018–2021)

William Nkemba

Nkemba oversaw a significant structural shift — the strengthening of the Members Trust governance model.

This period focused on financial transparency, rebuilding institutional credibility, and creating a more member-driven leadership system. It was less about silverware and more about sustainable governance.

The Present Chapter (2021–Present)

Omar Ahmed Mandela

The current president stepped into office with a mission: restore Villa to its rightful place at the top.

Under his leadership, there has been renewed focus on squad strengthening, branding, and competitive consistency. The ambition is clear — reclaim domestic dominance and return to continental prominence.

The Bigger Picture

The story of SC Villa is not just about trophies — it is about leadership evolution.

From foundational builders to modern reformers, each president has played a critical role in shaping the identity of the Jogoos. Some led during golden eras. Others steadied the ship during storms. Together, they built a legacy unmatched in Ugandan football.

As SC Villa continues its journey, one thing remains certain: leadership will always define its destiny.
